SUE KWON:RAP IS RISEN
In honor of National Hip Hip-Hop Month on November 16 Urban Aroma hosted a book signing for Sue Kwon’s new book RAP IS RISEN at Legacy NYC, 98 Orchard Street.
The event was hosted by Brooklyn native David “Chino” Villorente a.k.a. Chino BYI.
In RAP IS RISEN: New York Photographs 1988–2008, celebrated photographer Sue Kwon documents the era in which New York City witnessed the worldwide ascension and cultural domination of its powerful homegrown art form.
With access to some of rap music’s biggest legends, Kwon’s work offers an intimacy rarely seen in the hip hop photography of that time. The Wu-Tang Clan, Biggie Smalls, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Big Pun, Eminem, Mobb Deep, the Beastie Boys, Big L, Ice Cube, De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest are all represented, along with many others.
Supporters and patrons of Sue Kwon were treated to photography featured in the book that was displayed upon entering Legacy NYC. Over 200+ supporters came from all walks of NYC hip hop culture that encompassed DJ’s, graffiti artists, music and entertainment, writers, photographers and long time friends of Sue Kwon celebrated the night of her book launch.
Capturing the night’s magic was local NYC photographer J Boogie. Check out the eclectic group of the hip hop community that came to support.
